The Otological Center, Bangkok Unit (OCBU) was recognized in 1985 as the first International Federation of Otorhinolaryngology Society and International Society of Audiology (IFOS/ISA) center for the prevention of hearing impairment and deafness. It was the first designated WHO Collaborating Center for Deafness and Hearing Impairment Prevention & Management from 1988 to 2008 and affiliated with Hearing International since 1992. Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital is the first medical school in Thailand, established in 1890. Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital with 25 Departments offers a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Degree program, as well as various health and medical science degrees at the graduate, undergraduate, and post-graduate certificate levels.
In-house Services
(OPD cases ~20,000 per year and surgical cases ~ 400 per year)
- Provide clinical services in diagnosis and management of ear diseases, hearing and vestibular loss, and ear and hearing rehabilitation for both in- and outpatients in all age groups.
- Provide newborn hearing screening in-house as per national agreement.
- Provide surgical intervention for patients with ear, hearing and vestibular problems, including cochlear implantation, brainstem implantation, bone anchor hearing aid, middle ear surgery and skull-base surgery.
- Provide rehabilitative intervention for patients with hearing loss and vestibular problem.
- Provide hearing aids fitting and speech training for patients with hearing and speech problems.
- Giving consultation on diagnosis and proper management for patients referred for ear, hearing and balance disorders.
Training of Health Manpower
Specialists level
- Training 10-12 ENT specialists annually from various parts of Thailand is part of the ENT Specialists Training Programme accredited by the Thai Medical Council. This three-year program includes a ENT Board Examination. Additionally, one foreign ENT specialist is enrolled each year for the duration of the three-year program.
- Provide fellowship program in Neuro-Oto-Audiology, focusing on the diagnosis and management of hearing and vestibular disorders. This programme is available for Thai ENT specialists, as well as ENT specialists from other countries. We also welcome visitors to our center from various countries for academic exchange and collaboration.
- Provide short-course training in ‘Otology -Neuro-otology and Audiology, i.e. Hearing –Vestibular and its’ related problems’ annually, to ENT specialists and related medical personnel, including an annual international temporal bone dissection course.
Non-specialists level
- Training on equipment in-use and the maintenance to audiological technicians and related personnel.
